The world of web design is so diverse. There are a lot of web design trends out there, and some of them live longer than others. Sometimes a trend reaches the top of popularity, but just for a short period of time. Same thing may happen to skeuomorphism. Which is an absolutely awesome design trend that has “rocked the world” some time ago.
There is a bunch of design trends and tricks that sank into oblivion: web 2.0, retro redemption, dramatic drop shadows, etc. Many of those trends that broke the surface in 2011/12 are starting to fade away now. But let’s get back to the subject.
Skeuomorphism is gradually losing its positions while Flat Design is taking its place. Kinda strange that so inexpressive trend may substitute the one that imitates real life objects. Probably, that’s Google’s guilt, everyone on this planet is using their services and year ago Google started flattening interfaces of its products. This is not without a cause Flat design supposes minimalistic approach concentrated on usability, which looks awesome either on handheld touch screen devices or on desktop computers. Flat design does not use dimensional elements: shadows, gradients, and other techniques that help create 3D effects.
Anyway, flat web design can be really attractive. It can’t boast of a great amount of bells and whistles, though flat websites are perfectly doing what they are supposed to: deliver the message, promote your product or an idea. As you can see, flat design is a real antipode of skeuomorphism which brings things from real life into the web.
Before it can probably be lost, we’d like to pay tributes to this awesome trend and present an Interactive Infographics About Skeuomorphism. It’s designed as a shelf with various things placed on it. Simply click on the images one after the other and reveal the secrets of skeuomorphism.
